to Apr. 2002
The prize for the April 2002 "WHAT IS IT?" goes to Kathy Galardo, Director of Records, Research and Stewardship. Normally, Kathy isn't allowed to play the monthly "WHAT IS IT?" because her depth of knowledge concerning the history of the college is to great. Since this month was both tough and tricky, Kathy was allowed to participate. Her response was the only correct one received this month. Next
month's "WHAT IS IT?" isn't as tough, so Kathy won't be playing. Pictured above is Davenport College's Main Building (Lenoir, NC - circa 1930). Founded in 1855, Davenport College was, like Greensboro College, originally an all girls school affiliated with the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference. In 1932, at the annual meeting of the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference, it was decided "That there shall be one, and only one, college exclusively for woemn and this shall be our Woman's College at Greensboro [refering to Greensboro College]." It was also decided "That Davenport College be merged with Greensboro College so as to conserve and protect all endowments of Davenport..." Although it took several years for the various legal issues to be worked out and the merger to take place. The land and buildings of the fomer college became the property of the Lenoir County school system, and the endowment(s) and other material assets of Davenport College became the property of Greensboro College. A fair number of the women who were attending Davenport College at the time of the merger actually came to Greensboro College in order to complete their education. |
