What Now? A Present For Young Ladies
by Charles F. Deems

Summary:

According to the author, "This tracte was written in the brief intervals of scholastic duty, during three weeks almost immediately preceeding COMMENCEMENT. Fresh from the author's heart, with all its unpruned phraseology, he knows it will be a pleasant Souvenir to his own pupils, and hopes it publication may do some good to the larger circle of young, educated, Christian Ladies. April 26, 1852."

Interpretive:
Dr. Deems was president of Greensboro Female College from 1850-1854. During the middle of the 19th century, the rights of women to education comparable with that of education for men was a highly contentious issue. What Now? A Present For Young Ladies provides significant insight into the issue of women's education during that time frame. Considered a liberal in his time, Dr. Deems' What Now? presents a clear picture of his views on women's work and women's education.
